Adjusting to Life in Berlin: Overcoming Culture Shock and Finding Community
Moving to a new city is always a challenge, and when that city is Berlin, the experience is no different. I left Slovakia, my home country, over a decade ago, and since then, I’ve had the privilege of calling several places home before landing in Germany. However, despite the initial “falling in love” with the city, the start of my time in Berlin stands out as quite a difficult time. I’ve now been living in Berlin for 8 years, and while I’ve grown to love the city, my initial adjustment was not without its struggles.
The charm and challenges of Berlin
Berlin offers everything one could imagine: an exciting blend of history, modernity, and a vibrant arts, culture and party scene. But as many newcomers soon discover, the city’s dynamic energy can also make it difficult to carve out a sense of belonging. I thought the abundance of opportunities would make life in Berlin easier, but the reality was more complex. Finding a community that truly supports and enriches your life doesn’t happen overnight, and it can take time to feel truly at home.
When I first arrived, I wish someone had shared some universal moving-to-Berlin tips with me. The truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for creating a fulfilling life in this city. Every newcomer’s journey is unique, and what works for one person might not work for another. The process of adjusting to a new culture can often feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to feel isolated, even in a city as lively and diverse as Berlin.
Culture shock and the struggle for connection
Overcoming culture shock and adjusting to a new environment can be incredibly challenging. While the city is full of exciting possibilities, it also comes with its own set of struggles—especially when it comes to making authentic connections. It can feel like you’re constantly moving but not quite getting anywhere. Many newcomers arrive with high hopes, but without the right support, it can be difficult to build a real sense of belonging.
The fast-paced nature of Berlin can make it harder to form lasting friendships. The city's dynamism and abundance of opportunities often leave people feeling like they’re on the outside looking in, especially if they don’t manage to connect with others who share their values and interests. The key is finding your own unique place within the city, which takes patience and time.
“Adjusting to life in Berlin isn’t about fitting into the city; it’s about finding your own unique place within it.”
Finding community in Berlin
As someone who has been there, I know how difficult it can be to find your own unique place in Berlin. That’s where expat coaching in Berlin can make a world of difference. With the right support, newcomers can find ways to navigate the city's complexities, overcome culture shock, and build a life that aligns with their personal values and goals.
Tips for finding your place in Berlin:
Be patient and open to new experiences.
Join local groups or attend meetups to meet like-minded people.
If into sports, consider joining an activity that you love and connect with others.
If your time allows, look into volunteering options in your “Kiez” - neighbourhood.
It’s important to recognize that it’s not about forcing connections but about allowing them to happen naturally. Through my own journey, I’ve learned that adjusting to life in Berlin requires openness and at times, stepping out of your old mindset or comfort zone. However, while making friends and new connections, don’t forget to always stay safe, prioritise yourself and respect your boundaries.
