How is Coaching Different from Therapy?

In recent years, coaching has become increasingly popular as a tool for personal growth and transformation. However, many people still wonder how coaching differs from therapy. While both approaches aim to support individuals in overcoming challenges and achieving their goals, they do so with distinct methods and focuses. Let's explore these differences and understand how systemic coaching can be a powerful complement to therapy.

The core distinction: Coaching vs. therapy

Coaching and therapy share a common goal of supporting individuals in improving their well-being, but their approaches and focus areas differ significantly:

  • Therapy primarily focuses on healing past wounds, addressing emotional trauma, and managing mental health conditions. Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat psychological disorders and often work with clients over a longer period.

  • Coaching, on the other hand, is future-oriented and aims to help clients set and achieve personal or professional goals. It focuses on enhancing self-awareness, building resilience, and unlocking potential.

In my practice as a systemic coach, I work with clients to gain clarity on their current situation, identify goals, and develop actionable strategies to move forward. While my background in psychology provides valuable insights, I do not offer psychotherapy or diagnose mental health conditions.

 

The roots of systemic coaching

Systemic coaching has its origins in the family therapy approaches, which emphasize understanding individuals within the context of their relationships and environments. However, the approach in coaching is more forward-looking and solution-focused.

In coaching sessions, we explore patterns, beliefs, and dynamics that may be influencing a client's current situation. Rather than dwelling on past experiences, we focus on identifying strengths and creating new perspectives that empower clients to make positive changes.

My personal Journey: How Coaching Transformed My Life

I know firsthand how powerful coaching can be. During one of the most challenging times in my life, when I was facing burnout and felt lost and confused, I decided to try coaching. Within just three sessions, my perspective shifted, and I gained the clarity and confidence I needed to take meaningful steps forward.

This experience inspired me to become a systemic coach and support others in navigating life transitions, managing stress, and building resilience. Many of my clients also work with a therapist simultaneously, as coaching and therapy can beautifully complement each other.
